As part of the New Vic Theatre’s Circus Past, Present and Future programme of work earlier this year, we filmed our production of Astley’s Astounding Adventures to create 6 short films to showcase as part of the Theatre & Performance collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Giving an insight into the production – both onstage and behind the scenes – the shorts will be showing at the V&A until 28 January 2019.
Following the company of actors and our backstage teams during one performance of the production, the 6 short films document how the show was created: from giving an insight into how characters appear from beneath the stage; to showcasing the incredible aerial and fire work seen during the show; to documenting how the Stage Management team ‘call’ the cues and ensure the health and safety of all involved in the production.
Two of the clips currently showing at the V&A can be seen below and the full set can be seen at the V&A until 28 January 2019.

Astley’s Astounding Adventures, written by Frazer Flintham and directed by New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins, told the story of Newcastle-under-Lyme born Philip Astley who created the modern circus.
