Local artists invited to apply for the New Vic Theatre’s Associate Artist programme

9th November 2018

The New Vic Theatre has opened applications for its artistic development programme, The Kiln, and is now searching for a local artist, collective or company to become the theatre-in-the-round’s Associate Artist for 2019.

Inviting applications from local artists based in North Staffordshire who are working in performance, the New Vic’s artistic development programme offers a 12-month placement of bespoke support, tailored to the needs and ambitions of the successful Associate Artist.

The year-long programme could include access to expertise in technical areas of production including lighting and sound; production management support including budgeting; opportunities to receive mentorship from senior members of the New Vic’s team across all departments and opportunities to observe work, rehearsals and meetings. The programme could also offer access to meeting or research and development space.

Clare Reynolds, Co-Artistic Director of Restoke, the theatre’s first Associate Artists, said of their time as part of the programme: “Our time being Associate Artists at the New Vic was a real gift. We benefited from all sorts of support including box office, sourcing set, marketing advice and studio time. The beauty of the New Vic is the warmth of the staff across all departments and the fact that everyone knew who we were, welcomed us and offered their help and time with great generosity. We benefited from the greater capacity, resources and knowledge that the New Vic holds.”

Rachael Lines, Artistic Director of FRONTLINEdance, Associate Artists in 2017 said: “FRONTLINEdance enjoyed and valued being an associate company throughout 2017. The New Vic is a fantastic building, in a great setting, and it’s friendly – a perfect combination for reflection, thinking, development and being creative! The generosity we received from their staff who gave us advice, support, encouragement, time, sharing of their knowledge and experience with us, was hugely beneficial, appreciated and valued.”

Developed by the theatre to help nurture the development of independent artists and companies in the local area, The Kiln aims to build on the arts sector of North Staffordshire.

Applications to be the Associate Artist 2019 are now open, closing on Tuesday 4 December at 12.00pm. Artists wishing to apply should visit newvictheatre.org.uk/about-us/careers for further information and details of how to apply.
