NEW VIC GROUPS TO PERFORM AT ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY’S OPEN STAGE WEEKEND WITH TIME-TRAVELLING TALE

23rd July 2024

Members of the New Vic’s Youth Theatre and Ages and Stages company are set to perform on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) open air stage this Sunday, 28 July, as they travel from Newcastle-under-Lyme to Stratford-upon-Avon, as part of the RSC’s Open Stage weekend.

The Ages and Stages/New Vic Collective will perform a new piece of work – The Future Movement -in The Holloway Garden Theatre at the RSC at 1.00pm on Sunday. Developed by the group, the story follows Kiren, a young woman who has been accused of committing a crime by The Timekeeper’s Guild. Kiren is left having to defend herself in court for a crime she cannot remember committing – changing her past to alter her future. But it is not just Kiren’s life that has been affected by this.

The play is directed by New Vic Assistant Director Mandeep Glover (Assistant Director on O, Island! at The Other Place at the RSC, 2022), with the New Vic’s Becky Salt as Associate Director (following on from her role as Associate Director on the RSC’s First Encounters production of Romeo and Juliet earlier this year) and brings together two different generations to tell a brand-new time-travelling story that is full of suspense.

New Vic Assistant Director Mandeep Glover said: “Nobody knows what the future holds or looks like, no matter what generation you’re a part of, so it creates a level playing field for all to explore. This process has allowed participants to work with other people from a variety of different backgrounds and of a variety of ages who they may not normally interact with on a daily basis, and it’s been wonderful watching everybody’s confidence grow together.”

“The group are really excited to have been invited to take part in Open Stage 2024. It’s an incredible opportunity for them to perform at the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company on their open-air stage. It will be a unique and thrilling experience for both performer and audience alike and undoubtedly will be a very special memory for the group to look back on.”

The Future Movement will take to the stage at the RSC’s The Holloway Garden Theatre on Sunday 28 July at 1.00pm. It is free to attend but tickets must be booked in advance at rsc.org.uk/open-stage.
