NEW VIC LEADS RESEARCH PROJECT EXPLORING THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PERFORMING ARTS FOR CARERS IN THE COMMUNITY

26th June 2024

This week the New Vic in partnership with the Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health hosted a research event, ‘Parenting, Disability and Theatre Network’, led by New Vic Associate Director Caroline Wilkes. The event brought together creative artists from across the country who are also parents and carers of disabled children and adults.

The research partnership aims to explore how theatre can benefit the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities through participation in creative projects and performing arts.

As part of an ongoing collaboration, this week the group explored the representation of carers in theatrical productions across the region and the untold stories of care-givers in our communities.

The project hopes to grow a peer-to-peer network to support carers working in the theatre industry whilst also exploring opportunities for access to and participation in performing arts.

Research findings from the project will contribute to the development of knowledge in the fields of arts and health with the overall aim to provide support for individuals undertaking care work in communities across the UK through artistic activity.
