The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd

Friday 28 September–Saturday 13 October 2012

A New Vic production

by DH Lawrence, directed by Fiona Buffini

A passionate journey through the final days of a tempestuous marriage and a vivid portrait of life in a Midlands mining village.

Miner’s wife Lizzi Holroyd is just about at the end of her tether. Trapped in a loveless marriage to the boozing violent Charles. Fearful for her children, worn out with work and worry, part of her wishes her husband was dead.

When she finds herself drawn to an attentive young electrician from the pit, it’s not long before she’s dreaming of a different life. But, as anger and desire, resentment and betrayal explode into violence, tragedy threatens to engulf them all.
